State Street Consumer Staples SPDR (XLP)
ETF Description
XLP is a sector-focused exchange‑traded fund designed to track the performance of the Consumer Staples Select Sector Index, a slice of the S&P 500 that includes companies providing essential goods—items people buy regardless of economic conditions. This makes XLP one of the market’s most widely used defensive ETFs, often held to reduce volatility or hedge against downturns.
XLP seeks to replicate the Consumer Staples Select Sector Index by investing at least 95% of its assets in the same companies that make up the index. These include leaders in:
Tobacco (Philip Morris, Altria)
Retail & distribution (Walmart, Costco)
Household products (Procter & Gamble, Colgate-Palmolive)
Food & beverages (Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Mondelez)
